Discussion Questions: The Servant of the Lord

Read Isaiah 49:1-13 and consider these questions:

  1. Who is someone you always looked up to or admired? What particular talents or traits did you most admire about that person?
  2. Who is the servant of the Lord that is speaking in this prophecy (vv. 1-3)? What is the servant’s calling and message (vv. 1-6)?
  3. In what ways does the servant of the Lord suffer (vv. 4, 7)? How does the suffering of the servant foreshadow the sufferings of Christ (Isa. 52:13-53:12; Phil. 2:5-11)?
  4. How does the Lord reward his servant (vv. 8-12)? In what sense have you personally experienced being included the scope of that reward (2 Cor. 6:2)?
  5. Why does the servant invite God’s people to sing to the Lord (vs. 13)? How does the invitation to worship the Lord include a calling to the church to mission and evangelism (Dan. 7:14; Matt. 28:19-20)?
